After 5 years in the refugee camps at the Thai Khmer border in the 1980s, I was in front of an emergency case. As a woman, I have witnessed scenes of unimaginable devastation and suffering. I had to act against poverty and the remnants of war. That’s why I decided to work in Cambodia.
Between my humanitarian missions, I returned to France to work as a nurse in hospitals and clinics. By bicycle, I was looking for humanitarian sponsorships from pharmaceutical companies. It is with the help of the groups Sanofi and Beaufour Ipsen International and with my personal resources that Sok Sabay could have been founded. It is a long and constant struggle to ensure the most elementary human rights to children whose childhood has been ignored. These children are heroes because they have survived tragic situations. Their resilience allows them to overcome tragedies. Our action at Sok Sabay is to help them to overcome their suffering.
Marie Cammal, Founder of Sok Sabay
Cambodia is a country still stuck in endemic poverty. The child mortality rate is one of the highest in the world at 51‰ (2014, source: unicef.org). Furthermore, more than 33% of the population lives on less than a dollar a month. While Sok Sabay’s primary mission is to rescue children from vulnerable and violent environments, the association also wants to build this new generation of young people. They will have an education and schooling in Sok Sabay that will enable them to become the citizens of tomorrow. In Sok Sabay, children go to school to learn elementary school subjects. They also have evening classes in math, physics, chemistry and biology. The teachers are partly paid by Sok Sabay. Most children sufferring from chronic diseases, which results in a lack of schooling. This contribution of additional courses allow them to catch up with their school level.
In addition, they follow sports and artistic activities to ensure their personal development. This activities are real therapeutic effects. They practice instrumental music and play sports (rugby, aikido, yoga, swimming...). Finally, they regularly participate in extra-curricular activities to arouse their curiosity on various topics. Raising the third generation in our center the shelter, we are proud to count among our formers a scientist, four graduated in Law and Economics, four in Hospitality and Tourism and one student in the second grade of Architecture.
We attach great importance to ensure an education for each student adapted to their profile. Thus, Sok Sabay is and will remain a shelter on a human scale.
As a private non-profit organisation, Sok Sabay lives through the generosity of its donors and sponsors. This generosity covers the majority of our annual budget of $120,000 USD (2024). Part of the expenditures are also covered by local or international events organized by ourselves to generate funds. Finally, and more specifically, we are supported by francophone or anglophone volunteers who come to help us at the shelter. Today, more than 100 people support Sok Sabay either through permanent donations, exceptional foundations, legacies or by children sponsorship.
For as little as USD $110 per month, you can sponsor a student through our Cambodia mission. This sponsorship includes healthcare, boarding, food and education. Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and fund our mission.
